TULSA, Okla. (February 8, 2016) It wasn’t long ago that Aaron Reutzel was battling to earn his first win with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network. Accomplishing that in 2014, the goal quickly turned to the season ending $60,000 champion's prize.
March the calendar ahead one year, and the Clute, Texas driver stood tall as the 2015 Lucas Oil ASCS National Champion. Already up to speed with events in Arizona, Oklahoma, and Florida under his belt in 2016, Aaron Reutzel will again take on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour in the B.C. Fundz / Dissolvalloy No. 87.
“My goal last year was to win the championship and eight National Tour races. I won the championship, and won seven National Tour races so my goal this year is to again win the championship, as well as those eight A-Mains,” said Aaron, who is currently racing in Florida. Asked about other goals on the season, the defending champion replied, “We want to win the Championship again, but I also want to win a World of Outlaws A-Main this year. I’ve probably got 10 Outlaw races on my schedule, maybe a little less, but that would be one of my goals this year. In the 410, I’d like to get at least three wins, but with at least an Outlaw win.”
Looking at the team going into the 2016 season versus the 2015 season, very little has changed for Aaron. With the success of 2015, this season is about refinement.
“You know, car wise, I’m trying to learn from my mistakes last year because I feel like we did a good job, but the racing I felt like I made one mistake I can think of all year that cost me a win when I ran over a lapped car, but all our DNF’s were unnecessary. I never took myself out of a race, we just had too many part failures so this year, I’m trying to capitalize on those part failures to where I’m going to try and run newer stuff,” said Aaron of the racing program.
Turning the conversation on himself, the saying that racing is not a sport couldn’t be further from the truth for Aaron who has started to make changes in his life to combat the physical demands that come with Sprint Car racing.
“I felt like I never really got tired last year, but when we went to Yuma this year, one of the A-Mains was really physical. It was rough and heavy all night and I noticed that I started getting tired, so I feel like I’ve been taking racing for granted and you know, this is my job. This is how I feed my family and make my living so I’ve talked to a dietitian and a physical trainer and put myself on a really good diet plus I started running so I’m definitely going to try and be in better shape,” commented Aaron. “I’ve talked with Joey Saldana and Shane Stewart and they work out quite and bit just to be where they are, and look at Donny Schatz. He’s got a hell of a diet and workout going right now, and he’s unstoppable.”
With wife, Shelbey, and son, Carson, in tow Aaron will look to be in mid-season form with a few race dates on the docket before the 2016 Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour kicks off on March 11 and 12 at the Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. with the Sooner State Showdown.
Going into the 2016 season, Aaron would like to thank some of his sponsors who have made this possible, including: Dissolvalloy, B.C. Fundz, Simpson, Triple X Race Co., Shark Racing Engines, Jones & Hadley, Danny Sander Construction, Momentum Suspension Systems, and Wren’s Motorsports.
